In collaboration with design and architecture firm Social Studies Projects, we designed an ADU for a married couple working as writers and filmmakers in Los Angeles. By taking advantage of the pre-existing garage which was sited on the property line, we were able to avoid ground level setbacks which would have eaten into the precious rear yard space. Preserving this space was critical for the clients, who wanted to use the space both as a writers room and guest house. But with young children, preserving outdoor play space was an important goal of the project. The second story addition abided by the 5-foot set back, which produced a nice cantilevering effect, providing a covered walkway around the ground floor for plenty of shaded play area for those intense Los Angeles summer days.
